Spatial equilibrium model-based optimization for inter-regional virtual water pattern within grain trade to relieve water stress

چکیده

Abstract Realizing water usability and management sustainability represents one of the Sustainable Development Goals. Since grain cultivation consumes tremendous amounts water, inter-regional trade causes virtual flow, increasing stress in certain water-scarce regions. As second-longest river China, Yellow River bears increasingly severe stress. Considering food security, this study proposes a spatial equilibrium model (SEM) that combines partial theory transport models to maximize net social revenue balance supply demand, thereby optimizing relieve According different natural, technical conditions, we conceived five scenarios predict regional characterized with supplies, demographic structures, demand compositions water-saving technologies. Our simulation results suggest developed SEM can realize resources within Basin, which is capable resolving problem demands regions varying extents (13%–55%), mitigating Finally, recommend some constructive policies for

Modeling crop cultivation pattern based on virtual water trade: evidence from Marvdasht in southern Iran

ABSTRACT- This study aims to model optimal cultivation pattern based on the maximization of importing virtual water and social net income of major crops in Marvdasht, Iran. For this purpose, a linear programming model was developed considering constraints of virtual water and land limitations followed by other models to include employment restrictions. Based on the findings, wheat and tomato we...

Virtual water trade and time scales for loss of water sustainability: A comparative regional analysis

Assessment and policy design for sustainability in primary resources like arable land and water need to adopt long-term perspective; even small but persistent effects like net export of water may influence sustainability through irreversible losses. With growing consumption, this virtual water trade has become an important element in the water sustainability of a nation. We estimate and contras...

Inter-regional Freight Transport Model based on Spatial Price Equilibrium : Empirical Analysis of Japan

Abstract: This paper formulates an inter-regional freight transport model based on the spatial price equilibrium and applies it to Japan. This model covers twenty-three types of goods with eleven different regional industrial structures under the economic equilibrium theory. The unknown parameters of the model are calibrated in the iterative computation process. At the each iterative process, b...

Virtual water trade and development in Africa

A debate has long existed on the relationships between human population, natural resources, and development. Recent research has expanded this debate to include the impacts of trade; specifically, virtual water trade, or the water footprint of traded commodities. We conduct an empirical analysis of the relationships between virtual water trade, population, and development in Africa. We find tha...
